Bea- the Best Kind of Patient was created to teach the youngest patients how to effectively participate in their pain care.  Our field trial of the MPAS scale, stories, and ASL signs with 15 families showed that toddlers can provide feedback about the level of their pain given enough read-together story practice.  Our ideal users are families with little ones with birth defects, cerebral palsy, sickle cell disease, chiari syndrome, cancer, etc.  Those families can not wait for their children to master the abstract concept of pain (age 7 up) needed for faces type pain scales.   Singing the “Are you hurting?” song create for the My Pain Alert(R) Scale while giving pain medications could help condition the child to give a pain help needed response.  We learned from our own family that teaching the child gently about our “hurt boy” icon’s pain experience, then practicing responses works both for the child and the family, reducing stress.

Our “Bea” book has two parts: the story watercolored by Lexington KY artist and grandmother, Shirley Jeter, and the My Pain Alert(R) Scale training stories formatted with the ASL signs for each level on the facing page.
