Description

My Pain Alert Scale card is Speech Pathologist designed to help anyone struggling to communicate to get their pain care needs met.  Personal pain experience is not needed to effectively use this pain scale.  The six easy to understand pain levels are:  Fine-Feeling Better, Ouch, Need Medications, Need Stronger Meds, Meds Not Working, and Need Escape.  The patient can: point to the full body picture for their level, say the words or number, or the single vowel sound for each level. Caregiver can read and point to two levels giving the individual a simple choice.  Multiply the MPAS level number times two to report a standard zero-to-ten pain level rating.  Word side of MPAS card gives a list of  common pain describers and a graphic to compare medication effects.  The MPAS card is printed on polyester plastic which can be sanitized by wiping with soap and water or hand cleaner.

Four card set can be distributed to:  family or caregivers, shared with primary medical personnel, or held by patient to facilitate speaking up rather than waiting to be asked about their pain.

Most vital is getting caregivers’ attention. I know, when you are in pain, it is difficult to focus on much. The card helps simplify & organize communication so as not to add frustration and stress. M.K. Nunamaker 29/8/2021
