Description

Bea- the Best Kind of Patient book and MPAS card Kit is pain rating for preschoolers.  It is designed for your preschool or older child to practice getting help for pain before they need it.   A child in pain can not be expected to provide a history based rating of their pain level.  Medical staff can under-treat pain in children particularly in emergencies.  Bea – the Best Kind of Patient book has two parts. First is a watercolor illustrated “go to the doctor” story showing the child’s successful use of My Pain Alert(R) Scale to give their input to get pain relief. The second part of the book is introduction of each of the six My Pain Alert(R) Scale pain levels with interactive story practice using pointing to the MPAS level pictures, and/or simple sign language to convey needs.

Reading Bea – the Best Kind of Patient book together is ideal preparation for a child’s surgery experience.  The MPAS card can be used for daily wellness checks during an illness.  A parent who carries My Pain Alert(R) Scale either as a MPAS card or the My Pain Alert Book cellphone download has a tool to help their child with any painful emergency.  Bea’s mother has the My Pain Alert(R) Book ebook in her cellphone and uses it as a distracting and reinforcing activity with Bea while waiting their to see the doctor.

This picture book set given to a child with frequent pain events helps them participate effectively in their health care and avoid unnecessary pain.

Bea the Best Kind of Patient is a refreshing new communication tool for pain level determination in children. The guidance pictures are well drawn and ask the tough diagnostic question of each individual’s pain experience. A great communication tool for both caregivers and professionals. As a nurse, this tool assists children and adults to recognize pain (often in early stages), and communicate their level of pain. The use of ASL signs and the song is a fun way for a child to share their pain level, as well as, identify their needs. This book and the tools provided facilitates and improves communication between the person in pain, their family, and caregivers. Vici Meek, RN January 25, 2024

You’ve really created a comprehensive tool, including a story to help children prepare, a pain alert scale with simple and clear language, and multiple ways to communicate including pictures and ASL signs. There is even a song to accompany the text and help families and teams practice! I’m looking forward to trying it out with the students in the Fall. Brianne Bolin, School SLP July 13 2023
